District Profile

District Profile The Imphal East district lies between 24o78‘07” N latitude and 93o96‘74” E longitude with the elevation of 790 m above MSL. It is bounded on the North and East by Senapati district, on the south by Thoubal district and on the West by Imphal West district of Manipur. The Imphal East district came into existence on 18th June 1997 with it headquarter at Porompat occupying the eastern part of Imphal. This is the second most populous district in the state next only to Imphal West. The total area of the district is 709 sq. Km covering 3.2% of total state area with total population of 4, 56,113 (16% of total population of the state) distributed in 204 villages. The district has a total of 15,839 SC populations and 25,657 ST populations respectively (Census, 2011). The district has 36,355 cultivators, 22,371agricultural labourers, 23,618 household industries workers and 1, 16,417 other workers. The Imphal East district is divided into 3 (three) sub divisions namely Porompat (population 2,44,089 in 50 villages within 98 sq km area), Sawombung (population 86,162 in 67villages within 257 sq km area) and Keirao Bitra (population 82,024 in 36 villages within 122 sq km area).

Sub-tropical (Wetland)

Cover large area, cultivable for rainfed rice, suitable for pulses, oilseed and vegetables, mostly clayed soils. Rice is grown in most of the areas as monocrop kharif rice, left fallow during rabi and pre kharif due to scarcity of water and grazing animals.

 

Sub-Tropical (Upland)

These are mainly areas in the foothills where rice is still grown as monocrop, rabi pulses, oilseeds and other vegetables are cultivated in some areas.

 

Sub-Tropical (Hilly terrain)

Some parts of the districts is covered with medium hilly terrain, covers with plantation crops and forest trees. In some parts pineapple is widely grown. Other cereals, pulses and oilseeds are also grown at few places.

 

Sub-Tropical (Water body)

Water bodies are covered with water throughout the year or in muddy condition in dry period. Commercial fishery is being done in some areas where as many are lest unutilized.
